SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. The major purpose for SEO is to focus on how a site can be better recognized by search engines, such as Google and Bing. This is achieved through a combination of competitive keywords, professional-level content, links from other sites, and an established domain/page authority, among other factors.
Also, SEO can refer to a person who performs search engine optimization.

A meta description is a specific, 160-character explanation of a page. It appears below the links in a search engine and will include keywords from that search. Each page of a website should have a unique meta description. Think of a meta description as free advertisement on a search engine! Good meta descriptions help produce the correct clicks!

A title tag is the tab you see at the top of a web page. In this 60-character section, it is good to put a keyword focus of your page, along with your site name.

An internal link is a link on one website to another page on that same website. It is an import part of SEO and the user’s experience. An internal link is important to help the site’s user to find the information he is seeking. It is also an important way for the website owner to guide a user to the most important pages of the site. On a smaller scale, internal links also help to build a site’s optimization by having the website user consistently visit the most important pages of a site.
An external link is an important tool in building a site’s authority. An external link is a link that takes a user from one domain (www.exampleA.com) to another domain (www.sampleB.com). In SEO, external links are considered to be a major factor in increasing search engine’s ranking of the site. External links are most critical when provided by a site that already has established a high ranking in search engines. Also, links through social media can be a useful tool for increasing a site’s ranking.
For SEO to truly be effective, a website needs to build up what is probably the most important part of earning high ranks in search engine results: GREAT CONTENT. Great content can be defined as any type of writing that meets all or most of the following factors, in no particular order: 1) effective use of keywords, 2) length, 3) references and external links, 4) informing, 5) unique or in a niche market, 6) visually pleasing/easy to copy small snippets, 7) correct grammar/spelling, 8) designed with the reader in mind.
As the world has changed, social media has become the top way to easily gain customers. By using social media (e.g., Facebook), the website owner can directly connect to customers, share links she most wants the customer to see, and gain easy, instant shares for the website or particular web pages.
When a page is being optimized for search engines, an SEO may recommend including a robots.txt file. This file, usually attached to the root domain (www.exampleA.com), gives instructions to the search engines’ robots (also called web crawlers). Usually, these pages will tell a robot NOT to search a particular page of the site, something that may be useful in helping web search engines to concentrate on the most important pages of the site.
A sitemap is a list of pages of a web site accessible to web crawlers or users. For complicated sites, it can be useful in providing a list of the site’s pages to a user, often in a top-down, most important first fashion. It can also provide an easy link for web crawlers to find a complete list of a website’s pages.
SERP stands for “search engine results page.” When a search is performed on Google or another search engine, you then get a list of pages that search engine ranks. In the case of SEO, the goal is for a site to be on the FIRST page of SERP, where the majority of all clicks to visit a site occur in a search.
PageRank is a particular SERP result of the Google search engine algorithm. When a person performs a keyword search, Google ranks each page through its PageRank system, placing the pages in order of top-ranked all the way to the last-ranked page of that search result. The top ten ranking pages become first-page results on SERP.
Page Authority is a system developed by Moz, one of the top sources for SEO. It is a system, much like PageRank, that looks at particular factors of the perceived Google algorithm. Page Authority measures how a page on a website can rank for content or keywords compared to other similar websites. It is a tool to gauge how a site is performing versus its competitors.
